7/12/2003 - 7/13/2003: In 2003, Troop 172 took over the maintenance on the trail that Matt was working on for his eagle project before he passed away. Now the Matt Mertes Memorial Trail, it holds a very special value on all of us. To start our work we first placed a sign at the foot of the trail in honor of Matt. We then cleared the trail to the top of the mountain where we camped overnight.
