Matt Mertes

January 1, 1985 - October 17, 2001

On October 17, 2001 our friend and brother, Matt, passed away in a car accident.  Nothing could have prepared us for the emptiness that we all have deep in our hearts.  We have lost someone truly special.  Posthumously, Matt was awarded Scouting's highest honor, that of Eagle Scout.  If anyone in our troop deserved to wear that honor, it was Matt.  He will be remembered by all of us as a hard working, dedicated, loyal scout.  But most of all, he will be remembered as a great friend.

But Matt was more than a friend to all of us, he was our little brother.  He was often the brunt of our jokes.  Instead of discouraging him, we made him stronger.

Chuck always said that we are a large family and that at a moments notice we would be there to assist one another.  On the night our brother lost his life, the call went out and all of Chuck's children returned to the nest once again.  Friends and family made their way across state borders to pay their last respects to a fallen hero and be there for each other.

Now the memories of all those special moments we shared with Matt will forever standout in our minds.  Winning sled races at the winter camporee and the water carnivals at summer camp, the hike at Valley Forge, the way he could fix just about everything, these are all memories that we will carry with us for future generations.

We will never forget what you meant to all of us and we all miss you.
